Stories of Yogaranya: Akanksha Tripathy
My father always told me to get up early and exercise, but I had a mantra to either get up early or exercise which gradually diffused into never getting up and never exercising. I think it was always easier for me to crib about my health rather than “do” something about it.
I have a long history of migraines and allergies which would erupt from time to time to disrupt my schedule. Initially, these attacks were very irregular and infrequent but due to my “busy schedule,” I never thought much about it. Slowly the frequency of migraine attacks increased from once a month to four to six times a month. I took few medications and it worked for some time, but then the attacks were back with more force.
It was during this time my Manager Aruna Chatterjee told me about a yoga workshop for three days on Migraine. Initially, I was a bit skeptical and was not sure how yoga can help me, since I was in lockdown stuck in another country with lots of time in hand even after binge-watching Netflix. I thought let me give it a shot and that’s how I came across my yoga teacher Ramya.
The workshop was great. I enjoyed the sessions, followed all the rituals for two-three days and then the laziness crept in and for another six months, I was hibernating. Things kept moving and one more thing got added to my platter - insomnia. Finally, I decided enough is enough and texted Ramya, "Hi, I want to join your class" and even though it would sound cliché, it was the best use of phone I ever did in my life.

I joined the online classes in September 2019, and I am a part of the Intermediate batch, Trunk. I also joined the meditation class Revive and practice enhancement class, Nurture. I see so much discipline in myself after the classes and now I appreciate what my body can do. There are days when I am twisted in such a way that even I am surprised with my flexibility.
I saw a drastic improvement in my migraines. Now I get it once or twice in two months which is manageable, my sleep cycle is back to normal and I feel energetic throughout the day. Ramya is not only an excellent teacher but a very patient listener. Her instructions are so clear and precise that I never felt online classes as a drawback.
Through my very short stint with yoga, I learned that it makes you so much aware of yourself and your surroundings. I enjoy my classes and the short stories about asanas from Ramya. I am looking forward to my yoga journey and learning more and more about the practice.
